　レコード・プロデューサー／録音技師＝J.D.”ジェイ”ミラー(本名ジョセフ・デントン・ミラー)は1922年、ルイジアナ州南西の町ロタの生まれ(1996年に88歳で死去)。少年時代をレイク・チャールズやテキサス州東部ワートン群のエル・カンポで過ごしたそうですが、30年代半ばには生地ロタに近いクロウリーで暮らすようになったそうです。
　十代半ばに両親からプレゼントされたギター(とジーン・オートリーのソングブック)を弾き始め～ジョセフ・ファルコン＆ザ・シルヴァー・ベル・ボーイズ、ザ・フォー・エイシズ…といったケイジャン・バンドのギタリスとしてミラーは活躍したそうです。
　50年代に入るとミラーは、クロウリーで開業した自身のスタジオでレコードの制作を始めます。”スタジオに針が一本落ちても気がつくタイプだった(米ゴールド・バンドのエディ・シュラーとは正反対のタイプやったそうです)”という逸話があるほど耳が良かったらしいミラーは、独自のエコー・システムを駆使した～ムシッと湿度の高い録音が得意。ミラーが携わったレコードは、盟友フロイド・ソワイリュがヴィラ・プラットで設立した米ジンや、ナッシュヴィルのレコード屋＝アーニー・ヤングの米エクセロといったレーベルを中心に(ジャンルを問わず)数多くリリースされています。

　ミラーが吹き込みに携わった米エクセロの音源は、英国でも60年代初頭から英ステートサイドを通じてリリースされていたので、ローリング・ストーンズ、キンクス…といったビート・バンドに大きな影響を与えています。更に60年代後半～70年代初頭には元英デッカのプロデューサー＝マイク・ヴァーノンが設立した英ブルー・ホライズン(1968～70年までは英CBSが配給、1971～72年は英ポリドールが配給)が積極的に米エクセロの音源をリリースしていました。お好きなんですね！英国の皆さんは、この辺のズブズブが。
